The USDA (rather belatedly) began tracking farmers' markets in 1994. Although they're still not very good at it (a check of their database shows exactly THREE in Cincinnati which of course in reality hosts dozens every week) even with their limited knowledge of and connection with actual farmers (!) they're seeing significant growth in number of farmers' markets over the years.
USDA - on the ball as always.
ReplyDeleteI moved from Cincinnati a year ago, and the closest I came to a farmer's market was Findlay Market. I wasn't in to local eating then, and didn't pay much attention.
Now I live in Durham, NC and picked up Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation", closely followed by Pollan's "Omnivore's Dilemma" and that was all she wrote for me.
I've completely changed the way I think about food. Fortunately North Carolina has a thriving farmer's market community; I have several excellent markets to go to, a thriving CSA scene; it's just great.
