It's unfortunate that all of Jean-Robert's restaurants, with the notable exception of Pigall's, are exceedingly mediocre. He has spread himself too thin and does not oversee quality control at his establishments.
Your opinion would have more authority if it weren't made anonymously.
OK then. Jeanro Bistro is worse than medioce. Happy?
Well, I wouldn't say it makes me happy, but certainly it makes me more likely to take your opinion seriously. I ate at JeanRo Bistro for lunch not too long ago -- croque monsieur and pommes frites -- and had what I would consider a very good meal. The sandwich was perfectly cooked. I had one issue with it -- the slices of meat were thick enough that they tended to pull out of the sandwich instead of being easily and cleanly bitten through when I bit into it. So it was a bit messy, but delicious. The pommes frites were wonderful. I had a glass of wine with my meal, can't remember what it was but I do remember thinking it was very good. The price was reasonable. I was a happy eater. What was your experience that was less than mediocre?
It's hard to mess up a grilled cheese and fries. Dinner entrées are weak, over cooked, dry chicken, bad mussels on too many occasions (I've been put off mussels as a result), tough duck breast, tough pork chops, heavy, over-sweet sauces to cover up all of the mistakes. Portions are too big, they sacrifice quality for quantity. Plus most of the dishes really aren't French.
If you want to check out a well done French bistro, go to Brasserie Jo in Chicago. Renowned chef Jean Joho, who owns Jo and Mobile 5-star Everest in the same city, and he is in the Brasserie several days per week ensuring quality of food and service (and can frequently be heard screaming in French at the kitchen staff at Jo). The food is authentic French bistro fare, reasonably priced and outstanding.
Jean-Robert is skating on his name, and needs to try harder at his other restaurants.
We love eating at the Greenup Cafe. I actually wrote about it last year (same date...freaky) on my old blog. We still eat there.
