JeanRo Bistro (413 Vine St. 45202) is offering a Nose-to-Tail dinner (an idea popularized by Fergus Henderson's Nose to Tail Eating) Monday February 23rd at 7pm.
The 8-course prix fixe menu offers an opportunity for the adventurous eater to try some dishes that don't often appear on local menus:

Jeanro's food has gotten so bad that they can't even serve a decent bowl of French Onion Soup these days, or a piece of chicken that isn't completely overcooked and dried out. Now they are going to try and pull off a menu ripe with offal?? I don't think so.

I know where I won't be eating.
How often do you eat there? I think the food is always great! Maybe if you strayed from the safe (and boring!) choices of French Onion (passe')or Coq Au Vin (which I think they do very well however boring it may be)and tried some of their chef's more adventurous dishes you'd be surprised. But seeing as you eat soup and chicken (what do you drink with that, I know they don't have Kendall-Jackson or Budweiser) you most likely lack the refinement and taste to be able to appreciate what should be a great dinner from one of Cincinnati's best young chefs.
ReplyDeleteAnd BTW, no Jean-Robert won't be involved and he hasn't been involved with the Bistro for quite some time; the times that it made it onto Cincinnati Magazines top restaurant list two years ago (at 14, I think)and then vaulting to #6 last year. That has all been done under their current chef, for those of you who think they're paying attention but really have no idea what they are talking about.
If you do possess the testicular fortitude to eat the same you should certainly be there, no other chef in Cincinnati even has the beans to try this.
I had the nose-to-tail dinner last night and it was AWESOME. Truly interesting and unique stuff....fois gras cotton candy! Excellent job by everyone at Jean-Ro Bistro, this meal really showed your cooking 'chops'. I'm definitely going back for the 2nd nose-to-tail dinner!!

ReplyDeleteIt will be an annual event... we were also at this dinner, and it was excellent. And, we were so pleased, they served our Kinkead Ridge Cabernet Franc with the second course.

Anon Feb 22nd; I've had nearly every dish at Jeanro, and I strictly drink French wines at Jeanro BTW. I can guarantee that I am better traveled and have eaten at better restaurants than you ever have, so I am uniquely qualified to critique Jeanro. You, on the other hand, likely work for Martin Wade and you are playing a round of sock puppetry. If you think that the food at Jeanro is good then I seriously have to question your taste, or lack thereof. Allow me to be blunt; Jeanro is a truly awful restaurant. When the Bistro first opened and Jean-Robert was actually involved with the place it was good and solid but never great. JR has not had ANY involvement with this restaurant for two years now, and it shows.
ReplyDeleteThis place employs cooks (not chefs, but cooks) who make $8.00 an hour. That's less than Frisch's pays cooks by the way folks. My visits to Jeanro over the past year and a half have been awful. They cannot cook the simplest of dishes without over or under cooking them. Jeanro a complete mess to be frank.
Jeanro had no business presenting this dinner. I like offal and I've eaten it at some of the best restaurants in the world; Chateau Les Crayeres in Reims, Gill in Rouen, Au Crocodile in Strasbourg, Daniel, Le Bernardin, Per Se, Jean Georges & La Grenouille in Manhatten, Tru & Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago as well as at our own late, great Maisonette & Pigall's. Offal is hard to prepare and serve correctly. Even some great chefs avoid it, or most of the category at least. The short order cooks who work at Jeanro didn't have a chance of pulling this one off. Maybe, had this been four years ago and JR himself was personally overseeing this meal maybe.... But today, in the here & now? No fraking way.
I can't wait for Jeanro to go under. The food there is horrible, and the place has been living on it's name and "connection" to JR for far too long. Now that the public's blinders are off and they know that JR has nothing to do with the place (and JR strips the place clean of it's decor, which he owns) they will stop coming. Good riddance. It will serve Martin Wade right for what he has dome to JR, and the dinning scene in this city.
