Trillium Workshops is offering a Locavore Weekend Getaway August 14-16, 2009 with Marilou Suszko, author of Farms & Foods of Ohio: From Garden Gate to Dinner Plate, at the Carpenter Inn & Conference Center near Athens, OH. The event includes a Friday-night mozzarella-making workshop using Snowville Creamery unhomogenized milk, a Saturday morning visit to the Athens Farmer's Market (featured in Audubon Magazine as one of the best farmers' markets in the country) with produce-selection instruction and a cooking demonstration using the produce from that day's market, and Sunday brunch. Megan, I was just in Athens and at a couple of restaurants you might want to add to your tour or recommend to your guests for their meals on the own: Casa Nueva (40 W State) and The Village Bakery/Della Zona (268 E State), all of which focus on locally-produced ingredients. The Village Bakery also has a retail store which offers many local products. Restaurant Salaam (21 W. Washington) also sources some of their ingredients locally, especially their daily specials. All three restaurants are targeted at grownups and provide an alternative to the student pubs and national chains.
Hi Valeree...thanks for mentioning both Casa and Village Bakery and Della Zona. Part of the weekend will include gourmet pizzas from Della Zona using local ingredients including meats and farmstead cheese. Also, on Saturday after visiting the Farmer's Market we will be stopping at the Village Bakery for lunch and some shopping in their Undercover Market. Athens is a great place for Locavores!
